Roller Derby
Team Redesign
Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around an oval track. Game play consists of a series of short match ups refered to as "jams" in which both teams designate a jammer who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. This sport is primarily played by women who are pretty tough in appearance and physical ability, but this sport is also a show in a very adult way.
I set out to redesign a roller derby team and league. The Renegades Roller Girls is a league in which teams from various cities and states compete in. The Los Angeles Renegades is a team based out of Los Angeles, California that competes in the Renegades league. For both the logos I played off of the renegades aspect of the name so I designed logos that were very rebelious in their appearance. The league logo I used a symbol of rebellion being the fist in the air and the type is a very rough and jagged typeface to show the roughness and rebelious nature. In the team logo, I incorporated the image of a pinup doll wearing skates. She is posed in a very sensual way with her eyes looking at into yours and with a bandana over her face to show the rebelious side of the team.
Included in this system are 3 players posters. The reason behind the poses the models are in and the alley baackground is to scare the opponent of the Los Angeles Renegades with the grungy look. These are meant to be hanging in the arena so the opposing team is able to see them. The names are also a fear tactic to show that the team is rebellious and a little crazy.
The color palette consists of blood reds and black to give a "creepy" and "grunge" look.
